Just happened across this Register article (might trip keyword-based work filters), in which the now-online 1901 UK Census results are discussed, and it becomes apparent that the Victorians weren't any more mature about such things than our own generation. Either that, or an awful lot of last names have died out in the last hundred years...

Also, it's a bad sign when life starts imitating cheesy Paul Hogan movies.

Edit: On an unrelated note, octopus! (And annoying voiceover!)

Edit edit: First compliment of the day: "You bleed well!" Yay for free chocolate barsScience!

ID poll

And although I don't *usually* think online polls are worth even the time it takes to laugh at them, this one is so blatantly skewed that it deserves a good sound curb-stomping:

Recently, President Bush was asked by a reporter if he felt intelligent design should be taught in public schools. President Bush replied: "Part of education is to expose people to different schools of thought. You're asking me whether or not people ought to be exposed to different ideas, and the answer is yes."

Please fill out the form below and click the submit button.
Should students be exposed to different ideas, or should they be shielded from information about intelligent design? Give us your opinion. *
Yes, students should be exposed to the theory of intelligent design in public schools.
No, the theory of evolution is the only theory which should be taught in public schools.

Helpfully, the default answer is set to 'Yes' to assist any AFA members who've forgotten what it is they're supposed to believe. But they seem to have forgotten to advertise this poll to anybody outside their own membership; perhaps we could help them by passing it on to a broader cross-section of the public?

To participate, you need to provide a US state, a zip code within that state (here's a handy reference just in case you've forgotten what US state you live in) and an email address. Site states that they may use this to send you "updates on matters of importance"; there's an unsub option, but whether it actually works is anybody's guess.
