Just happened across this Register article (might trip keyword-based work filters), in which the now-online 1901 UK Census results are discussed, and it becomes apparent that the Victorians weren't any more mature about such things than our own generation. Either that, or an awful lot of last names have died out in the last hundred years...
Also, it's a bad sign when life starts imitating cheesy Paul Hogan movies.

The irony, after all, would be as delicious as the chocolate!
