Ooh, purdy.
Dec. 16th, 2002 04:18 pmWhile looking for backup in a religious discussion, I came across this:
http://www.arabicbible.com/free/free_calligraphy.htm
And this:
"In Islam there are 99 names of God, but these are also not to be considered as proper names — the idea of actually naming God for Muslims, will be regarded as a way of reducing God into a human framework. The high number of names must be understood as an expression of the incapacity of man to grasp the total nature of God." (from http://lexicorient.com/cgi-bin/eo-direct-frame.pl?http://i-cias.com/e.o/allah.htm.)
Both of these, in their own ways, I find rather beautiful.
Additional thought: Rey's neighbour has been encouraging her to start attending church again, and I've promised that should she do so I'll go with her.
I am sorely tempted to put one of the above calligraphy samples on a T-shirt - any of them would work for this purpose, except the one for John 3:16, which is a little too obvious. And see just what assumptions people make.
After-after-thought: After looking up what 1 Samuel 16:7 says, I feel morally obliged to do this.

Date: 2002-12-16 03:35 pm (UTC)B) Yes, you are now morally obliged to do this.
(I might be morally obliged to do this, too. Because it would confuse and potentially offend at least three (in my case) categories of people while remaining true to the All-Holy...)

Date: 2002-12-16 03:46 pm (UTC)John 3:16 is obviously the most important passage for me, by definition. But behind that and the equally famous 1 Corinthians 13:4-7 (Love is patient...), my personal favorite is Luke 6:37-38:
Do not judge, adn you will not be judged. Do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven. Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, wil be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.
Bloody screaming wish more of my fellow so-called Christians would remember *that* one...
