Of course, what's really _important_...
Dec. 4th, 2002 08:59 pmThe other day, Our Glorious Leader announced that he would be willing to send troops into neighbouring countries to prevent terrorist attacks on Australia being launched from those countries. You can imagine how the Neighbouring Countries (most of whom, BTW, heavily outnumber us) reacted to this. As one letter-writer noted, the chimpanzee who takes his cues from the 1000-pound gorilla is in for a nasty shock.
Today, John Howard was on the front page of the Telegraph. Had he apologised for his comments? No. Was he, perhaps, addressing domestic issues of import - drought relief, pressing social concerns, something like that?
Nope. He was opining that because we've won the series every year for the last fifteen years, the Ashes trophy should be brought to Australia (up till now it's remained in England, regardless of which side wins.)
I'm in two minds about this. On the one hand, it bothers me that in times like this the PM is devoting his attentions to sport.
On the other... well, maybe keeping him busy with trivialities is not such a bad thing.
