It's probably a sad thing that my first reaction to this theoretical ecology of vampires is neither "who cares", nor "wow, that's cool", but "wait, I think there's an error in that first expression".

Strange that he made s a constant instead of a variable dependent on H and/or V, with no living humans it would become 0.

There is that; I suspect the formula is rather less good for near-zero H. My main objection to it is that that the '-aHV' term in that first expression shouldn't be in the denominator, but after the fraction term altogether - I suspect it might be a formatting error.
