Hmmm.

Looked at the screen a few minutes ago, and suddenly realised I had no idea whether it was morning, or afternoon, or evening. Haven't encountered _that_ for a while. This is what happens when work eats up the rest of my life. I got a good night's sleep last night, and it's only half-three, but sometimes I _can_ focus that hard. On the bright side, I got a good 7 pages of thesis written already today. (Mantra: "And it will be more once I double-space the bastard.")

Starting to make odd mistakes, which suggests that I should go relax soon, but I want to finish this chapter. Plus, Ana has promised to come and see why I don't have access to the network drive. Seeing as how I've been unable to back up my thesis anywhere but the hard drive on this one machine for the last two weeks, I'm rather eager to get that little detail fixed...

(Meanwhile, I've been printing out multiple copies of everything, in case the drive _does_ get any ideas...)

*puzzled look* No floppy disks?

Are they still in computing? I thought they'd moved to archaeology?

Alistair,
who has two floppy disk drives between six computers. But one of those is a 5.25" attached to a BBC B, so doesn't really count. That *is* archaology.

Maybe Deor meant Zip drives. Physical media backups are always good.

Good luck, Lederhosen. It'll all be over soon...

No, I meant regular floppy disks, the 3-1/2" kind. How big is the thing anyway? It's mostly text with some charts and such yes? Unless it's a _lot bigger than I'm imagining I'd've thought it should fit on a floppy disk or two.

So far I haven't embedded the graphics, and the thesis per se is a bit under 1 meg (which will blow out a _lot_ once I add graphics - it's a chart-heavy project.)

OTOH, just one of the relevant data files is 18 meg. There are others too, albeit smaller.

The floppy drive on this machine seems to be faulty. It'll _pretend_ to copy stuff onto disc, and the files will look just fine until I attempt to open them, at which stage cue "Ha ha!" sound effect a la the Simpsons. Plus, some of the things I want to backup are pretty big.

As for a zip drive... we have 'em around. To get things onto zip drive, I'd first need to transfer them to the network drive...

But my access is up again, yay! so things are backed up.

Ah. I have an external zip drive. Parallel-port connector, so it's slower than hell, but it can be moved from one computer to another, which is very handy. Except it doesn't like my work computer, so I am occasionally reduced to zipping large files over several floppy disks for backup. Ah well.

But my access is up again, yay! so things are backed up.

Oh very good. There's little quite so worrisome as knowing that all your data is sitting vulnerably in just one place. *shudder* Glad you were able to get the back-ups done.
