The finger goes to Mexico...
Jul. 21st, 2004 10:14 pmRatboy has now taken to singing Rammstein and the Cure in the shower of an evening. *bewildered look*
With the Rammstein, mind you, he's just singing the melody, because he doesn't speak German. Which is probably just as well.
In other news, I finally made Shelob's legs work. This was tricky, because...
When making giant bugs, there are three basic ways to do the legs.
#1: Cast them as one piece, along with the body. Nice if you can do it, but usually the resulting shape is too fiddly.
#2: Cast the body, with sockets, and cast each individual leg as a separate piece - then glue them into the sockets. This is what GW usually seem to do.
#3: Cast the legs in pairs, shaped like an upside-down 'W'. Each pair forms a bipod, and the body rests on top of those bipods. This is how Reaper usually do it.
I *much* prefer #3, because it makes for much stronger models. The only significant forces acting through the joins are compressive, so you barely need glue at all - just a little to hold position and stop the legs falling off when you pick it up. It's a little harder to get the underside of the model looking good, since you have the leg units running all the way under. But, hell, it's the underside - who's going to see?
With #2, you end up with torqueing forces on the joins. This puts a lot more strain on them, raising the spectre of Shelob's legs snapping off under her weight. With a good join it shouldn't be a problem - superglue ought to hold it - but unfortunately, GW don't pay as much attention to their ball-and-sockets as Reaper do, resulting in ill-fitting joins that don't have enough contact to glue properly even *before* being asked to actually support a load.
So I ended up filing the leg pieces a bit, then stuffing the sockets with putty to improve the fit before I glued. Shelob has been standing on three legs without snapping them off for 24 hours now, so it seems to have worked. Next, undercoating & painting.
Thought... some spiders carry their brood around on their back with them. I wonder if I can figure out a good way to make really small spiders to attach to her?

Odd, isn't it? I mean, it's not like he lives with a pair of Goths or anything...

And here I thought it was just the pipes making noise.

This reminds me - I've been wondering for a while whether, in Rammstein's "Sonne", the line is 'Wir kommt die Sonne' or 'Hier kommt die Sonne" (says she whose computer is currently playing "Rein Raus"). It would completely change the meaning of the phrase, and since my school German lessons were many years ago, it's one of the few I can translate without reaching for the German/English dictionary.
