Remember how, about a month ago, I
opined that it would be unethical and a dangerous precedent to use emergency provisions to impose a Democratic president on people who'd voted for a Republican?
Democrat senator Tim Johnson has been
hospitalised with 'stroke-like symptoms' and is now
undergoing brain surgery. If he is unable to serve out his term, the state governor - who is a Republican - can appoint anybody he likes as a replacement, as long as they meet the normal legal requirements for senators.
I submit that if the Democrats
had announced a plan to impeach both Bush and Cheney and so install Pelosi as President, they would not now be able to make a strong case for why the governor should pick a Democrat. Or, and this is more likely to be an issue, a
bona fide Democrat - when a similar situation occurred in Australia, the state governor in question selected a stooge who was on paper a Labor Party member but could be relied upon to help topple the Labor government of the day.
