I'm not surprised. Disappointed, certainly, but hardly surprised.

I watched John Howard set the limbo pole at a new low, and I watched Kim Beazley try to crawl under it, each trying to outdo the other in putting the boot into refugees. If it weren't for Labour's education policies, I'd have had nothing at all to choose between the two.

I don't know which saddens me more. The fact that politicians from Coalition and Opposition decided there were votes to be gained by turning away refugees from tyrannical and brutal regimes, vilifying those refugees with baseless accusations of 'throwing children into the sea', and locking them up for years if they do make it onto our soil.

Or the fact that millions of voters proved them right by re-electing this moral bonsai plant.

One Nation were all but wiped out, but this is no triumph. The party may be in tatters, but the policies are alive and well and winning votes for the Liberal Party now.

The only silver lining is that the Green vote tripled. I guess I'm not the only person who was disgusted by the majors this time around.

I have to remind myself from time to time that I am not morally accountable for what my fellow human beings do. Only for myself. But it'd be easier if I could bring myself to respect them a little more than I do.

Apt choice of music

I was pleased to see that the One Scapegoat Party polled less than the informal votes whereever I looked. I'm in the "looking for good signs" stage I guess.

I wanted to let you know that the phrase "this moral bonsai plant" will brighten my darkest hours. :)
