Canberra fires
Jan. 23rd, 2003 03:15 pmWell, the current count for the ACT fires is 530 homes destroyed and four people killed; nobody else is listed as missing. The fire crews are frantically backburning, trying to establish a few buffer zones before the weekend when conditions are expected to worsen again - there are still three major blazes in the area.
The firebug in me is half-sorry I missed it; sounds like it was the sort of thing you're not likely to see twice in a lifetime. Fires creating so much heat that their own smoke reached flashpoint and ignited ahead of them; fire-driven winds strong enough to uproot trees. Brrrr.
