Vampire demographics

Fevre Dream's vampires are a separate, immortal race who live among humans but don't recruit from them (other than minions and dinner). They look like humans and reproduce in a similar manner, sort of...
...the males of my race feel desire only when the female enters heat, and that happens but rarely - most frequently when male and female have shared a kill together. Even then, the women are seldom fertile, and for that they are thankful, for conception usually means death for our females.
Hmmm. If your maternal mortality rate is over 50%, that tends to imply that you're not producing enough female children to replace the women who died in childbirth, which has Consequences For The Continuation Of The Species. Unless you have a very high proportion of female children and/or multiple births, neither of which appear to be the case.
Since these vampires are capable of living forever unless killed by violence, I tend to think that if I was a female vampire playing by these rules, I would be doing my damnedest to avoid sharing a kill with a male vampire.
