Happy 18th to [personal profile] da_norvegicus! We went up to Sydney for it this weekend; naturally, this included being shanghaied by my mother-in-law into as many rounds of Catan as we could squeeze in. Happy birthday also to [profile] quatranoctal!

I sometimes have to remind myself that a book is not actually a living thing, and will not suffer if I decide to abandon it unfinished. I really don't need to finish it just out of guilt if I'm not enjoying it.

(It turns out that "best-selling in Iceland" does not actually guarantee a good book. I'm not sure whether the fault is in the original, or the translation, but after 200-odd pages I hadn't managed to get remotely interested; the plot seemed OK, but the writing was very stilted and uninspiring.)

No such objections to Dorothy Sayers, whose books Rey and I have been working through. She even has the good grace to occasionally write a mystery that I can solve before the end of the book (when the gimmick is science-based, at least - I suck at alibi stories).

Likewise, I rather enjoyed No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency, and will have to go look for the sequels once I've finished the Sayers. I think if I had to describe the book in one word, it would be "warmth".

...and starting a new D&D game on Tuesday. Will probably do the game blogging here rather than over at [community profile] shinyshinyelves this time. Very much looking forwards to it!
