That episode should really have been titled "Doctor Who: The Damp is Rising".

I second [livejournal.com profile] msmanna: that episode made very little sense. I look forward to the next series, when Coal Monsters attack Newcastle.

Also, if the immutable laws of time can be altered by getting sufficiently stroppy and shouting at them, why is Brian Blessed not the most powerful Time Lord in the universe?

Someone ought to write to Peter Moffat with a cast suggestion. Sack Matt Smith, give the job Brian Blessed instead!

If he's not available, can we get Rik Mayall?

Rey tells me he was offered the job a couple of times and turned it down, alas.

Now I think of it, there's that scene from Blackadder 1:

Messenger: "The King of $PLACE is dead."
Richard IV: "I LIKE NOT THIS NEWS! BRING ME SOME OTHER NEWS!"
Messenger: "...The King of $PLACE is not dead."

Maybe he was using his time-altering powers then?

I don't think he was ever actually offered the role - he was, however, rumoured to be taking on the role after Peter Davison.

I recently rewatched his appearance in the second section of "Trial of a Time Lord" - he's clearly having a huge amount of fun with his barbarian warlord character.

I was going to say, "Didn't this story make a lot more sense when it was John Carpenter's Prince of Darkness?"

It also had one of those stylin' John Carpenter soundtracks.

Because it's too busy giving him fresh horses.

I think the Doctor Who writing team got spread too thin from the spinoff frenzy. There's still the occasional gem, but the quality of the average episode has been in steady decline.

Also, I think RTD puts priority on Doctor!Angst and Moving Speechy Moments above well-thought-out plots, which does not match my priorities.
