On the way to work today, Rey and I noticed a big fluffy golden retriever running around Anzac Parade. Anzac Parade at rush hour is not a good place for any unattended dog to be, let alone one with as little road sense as this one, so I ended up getting out of the car and trying to round it up (Rey had to go on & drop
da_norvegicus at school.)
Unfortunately, although it looked reasonably well-cared-for to my untrained eye, it had no collar and was extremely skittish. Even if I'd been able to catch it, I didn't have anything to restrain it with. I did have a sandwich, and it was just brave enough to take pieces of bread from my hand & then back off again; I managed to lead it away from Anzac Parade and down a side street; unfortunately, while I was trying to get nearby shop-owners to find something to restrain it with, it wandered back towards Anzac Parade. Somebody yelled at it, and it bolted - fortunately away from the main road, but we lost it down a side street. I went looking for it along with a couple of other people, but eventually had to give up and go to work. Hope it's OK; I'm guessing it was somebody's pet that slipped its collar and then got panicked.
Peter Rabbit: Tank Killer. Some people have waaaay too much time on their hands.
And some highlights from Kitzmiller et al. vs. Dover School District:
For the reasons that follow, we conclude that the religious nature of ID [intelligent design] would be readily apparent to an objective observer, adult or child...
The evidence at trial demonstrates that ID is nothing less than the progeny of creationism... The citizens of the Dover area were poorly served by the members of the Board who voted for the ID Policy. It is ironic that several of these individuals, who so staunchly and proudly touted their religious convictions in public, would time and again lie to cover their tracks and disguise the real purpose behind the ID Policy...
Those who disagree with our holding will likely mark it as the product of an activist judge. If so, they will have erred as this is manifestly not an activist Court. Rather, this case came to us as the result of the activism of an ill-informed faction on a school board, aided by a national public interest law firm eager to find a constitutional test case on ID, who in combination drove the Board to adopt an imprudent and ultimately unconstitutional policy. The breathtaking inanity of the Board's decision is evident when considered against the factual backdrop which has now been fully revealed through this trial. The students, parents, and teachers of the Dover Area School District deserved better than to be dragged into this legal maelstrom, with its resulting utter waste of monetary and personal resources.
Plenty of good coverage at Pharyngula; Michael Behe took a deserved hammering from the judge. And from the Wikipedia coverage, I was interested to see this statement from one of the plaintiffs' witnesses: "as a person of faith who was blessed with two daughters, who raised both of my daughters in the church, and had they been given an education in which they were explicitly or implicitly forced to choose between God and science, I would have been furious, because I want my children to keep their religious faith."
Maybe if I'm really good, Santa will bring perjury trials for Bonsell and Buckingham? I can hope.
Speaking of such things, BTW, check out the LJ holiday image icon... in particular, note the letters on the stockings :-)
