AFAICT from some quick Googling, the Amish aren't particularly opposed to modern medicine (with some exceptions) but don't make it a high priority either; CDC says "Although vaccination coverage among the Amish is low, some health departments report that, with vigorous effort, many Amish will accept vaccination."
If you do, can I get you to direct it in the direction of my wife's cousin and his wife? They have 2 children, and have refused to vaccinate, citing fears of autism.
Yeah, I know. We've tried that, too. Apparently, pseudo-science and urband legend is more credible then real science with them.
There's a decent discussion of the autism/vaccination scare here, but it's only useful when people are willing to consider evidence rather than running on gut feelings and simplistic explanations :-(
I sat in on a dissertation defense at one point that suggested that ADD/ADHD could be linked to the high levels of zinc in prenatal vitamins. (It was an animal study that demonstrated that the offspring of rat moms who were given high doses of zinc had brain lesions in the portions of the brain that are involved in ADD/ADHD.) I wonder if there's a possibility of something similar happening prenatally in terms of autism.
