False history in the making

An amusing episode here, in which a quote from
james_nicoll picks up the "born and died" dates from the wrong James Nicoll, and subsequent forwarders obligingly antiquate the spelling - presumably, in an attempt to 'correct' it back to the 19th-century form it was never originally in.
I think this sort of thing is behind a lot of the stories on Snopes - people trying to make stories more accurate by massaging them to fit into their ideas of reality.
