"W-- consented, and now the table seemed to be endowed with life and manifested a great affection for W--; it rose on two legs and pressed against his breast, as if it intended to embrace him."

- Montague Summers, The Vampire in Lore and Legend. Describing a seance, which doesn't really make it *much* better.

In other news, ganked from [livejournal.com profile] 17catherines: Five Ways Jane Austen Never Died, which goes some way to remedy the desperate shortage of Jane Austen/Cthulhu crossovers.

In other other news - well, not really 'news', since it happened more than a month ago - last time we were in Melbourne, we taught young Ratboy a simple rule for easing our consciences while travelling in the car with [livejournal.com profile] silverblue and [livejournal.com profile] brandtotter:

"If one of us says something, and everybody else laughs, you are to please say 'I don't get it.'"

"Even if I do get it?"

"Especially if you get it."

Bright lad, he is :-)

Hrmm. I think Summers was a reasonably well-known occultist in his day, and with a high enough profile that I vaguely recognised the name when I saw the book, so it's possible. I think he actually wrote two, of which this one's the second. I never thought about the names before...

Oh, he's written several, with The Vampire, His Kith And Kin and The Vampire In Europe as two others (strike that - Wikipedia says the Vampire In Europe is an alternative title to The Vampire In Lore And Legend); he's also written at least one book on werewolves and a couple of books on witchcraft. My, but he seems to have been, as wikipedia puts it, "in every way a 'character'". Also a pal of Al Crowley, I see...
