In this day and age?
Jun. 1st, 2004 05:35 pmHad fairly unproductive day today; it's been a stressful couple of weeks, and it's hard to concentrate on the rather tricky bits of programming I'm supposed to be doing.
Got home, collected mail, found a large envelope addressed to me with no return address. I opened it up, and this is what I read (imagine, if you will, the following crappily photocopied, embellished with a hand-drawn smileyface):
My name is David Rhodes and in September 1997 I lost my job. At the time I was living at the edge of my means and in debt. Consequently, this started a chain reaction that ended with the repossession of my home and car. If that wasn't enough several debt collectors were constantly hounding me. As you can probably imagine life looked bleak...
[standard chain letter follows.]
In this age of high-volume email spam, it feels like a trip back to another age. And it's not just any old MMF scheme, either, it's a Dave Rhodes MMF! (Although, curiously enough, the message claims Mr. Rhodes' place of abode as Perth... and I'm fairly sure he spent September 1997 in a federal prison.)
Best of all, though, it comes with five names and addresses of idiots and/or crooks, all of them in Australia. And right now I'm in the sort of mood where it will be an unmitigated pleasure to report the lot of them.
Did I mention it's been a stressful couple of weeks? I *really* need this holiday coming up.
