Children of the night... SHUT UP!
Aug. 21st, 2001 07:02 pmWe were just going to bed last night, about 1 am, when Dog-Or the Wonder Spaniel starting barking and running around like a mad thing. More so than usual. At first we thought he was telling us that Adam had fallen down a well, or been kidnapped by tree smugglers, but it turned out to be another dog outside trying to dig his way under our rabbit hutch. (Good thing it's a solid one.)
So, we went outside, armed with the Dog Behaviour Readjustment Tool (an unnecessarily large Super-Soaker), to find a cute and rather lovable little fella by the name of 'Gruffy'. He even had a tag, though it was hard to read the number. Rey went back inside to call his owners, but nobody answered (in the morning we found we'd misread the number), and while I waited outside with Mr. Gruffy a mucking big malamute peered over the neighbour's fence at me. Said fence is about four feet high, so I wasn't thrilled by this - I'm wary of strange dogs, especially big ones, unless I _know_ they're friendly. And malamutes can be vicious if they're not properly trained.
So, reluctantly, we put Gruffy on the line outside that we normally use for our dog during the day. We weren't exactly hapy about this, since it was cold and sleeting, but we didn't want him pestering our bunny and we didn't want him roaming and getting run over. And there's a kennel within range of the line.
Off for a couple of hours sleep, woken by piteous dog noises from outside ~ 3 a.m. Gruffy was cold and miserable, and not bright enough to shelter in the kennel. So reluctantly, we moved him into the laundry where Dog-Or sleeps. Dog-Or was quite noble about this. The malamute was still roaming in the area, so we moved the rabbit hutch into the garden shed and wedged it shut.
A couple more hours sleep. Woken by suspicious noises from outside. I went to investigate, and through the window I saw the malamute lurking just outside the back door - growling menacingly. Mmm, nothing quite like a large and angry dog. But he hadn't got into the shed, so I went back to bed.
Woken a couple of hours later by piteous dog noises from inside - apparently Gruffy had decided he wanted to go home. It being 7 am ish and light, Rey realised we'd had the number wrong and called his owners. Mystery revealed! The malamute was _also_ their dog, so he'd been worried that we might be eating Gruffy. Owners arrive, dogs rescued, all well again, but sleeping in two-hour installments just isn't enough for me. I dream of sleeping through the whole night one of these days, but such dreams are inevitably interrupted by acts of dog.
