Rey and I went to see Dance of Death tonight. It was... interesting. Not as depressing as I'd expected, but still pretty grim. A lot of black humour, and plenty of "God help us if we ever get like that" moments.
Towards the end, Ian McKellen took a stage fall that looked surprisingly realistic, yes, you can all guess where I'm going with this. We waited around backstage afterwards for about half an hour, chatted with a young lady who told us she was doing her PhD on nineteenth-century pornography, and said nice things to the other actors. Although I think they suspected we were really only there for Sir Ian.
At last he came out. He was looking rather tired, and when Rey asked him how much practice it took to take that fall without injuring himself he held up his hand. Squished finger, owie.
But he was very gracious, shook hands, and signed things. We'd figured out that most people were going to offer him programmes or copies of LotR, so instead we gave him a marker pen and a rainbow flag. It seemed rather fitting... although I felt a bit guilty seeing how much trouble he had signing it with only one good hand. Anyway, he was a gentleman.
