Oooh, and useful links.

'Ooooh': Christie's are auctioning a Roman-era d20. "Modern scholarship has not yet established the game for which these dice were used."
Minor 'oooh': Latham upsets Beazley for the ALP leadership. Truth be told, I haven't really compared their politics, but I suspect Latham has a better chance of winning the next election than Beazley or Crean would've; at the least, he's unlikely to practise Beazley's "small target" politics. And he was willing to call Howard what the rest of Parliament ought to have been calling him for the last year, for which I have to give him some credit :-)
And now, time for my Useful Information Link Collection.
Criteria: Sites that I visit frequently, for informational purposes (or ammunition...), and find exceptionally useful. I've left out a few that you probably already know about (Google, IMDB, dictionary.com, etc). I don't vouch for *everything* on these sites - at least two contain a small amount of information that is, IMHO, mistaken - but in general the standard is very high.
Ontario Consultants on Religious Tolerance. If you want an even-handed source of information on just about any religion, this is the place to go. Includes in-depth information on what disagreements exist within religions (issues like ordination of gay clergy), what major viewpoints exist on such issues, and why each side believes what they do.
Oh, and they really need donations at present. If you have the money to spare, Please Consider.
Allmusic.com. Like IMDB, only for music.
Snopes Urban Legend site. Wondering whether the County of LA really issued a notice requesting computer vendors to cease identifying components as "master" and "slave"? The answer's here.
Mathworld. A wonderful reference on matters mathematical. Also has astronomy, biography, chemistry, and physics, though in less detail.
Don Lindsay's Creation/Evolution pages. Explains what evolution is (and what it is not), and debunks the arguments of "Scientific Creationism" in detail. If somebody starts asking why there aren't any transitional fossils, or how a structure as complex as the eye could have evolved from scratch, this site covers it.
Edit: This is really neat: a digital sundial! (Thanks to
harliquinn.)

Date: 2003-12-01 05:53 pm (UTC)My favorite is The Argument From Personal Astonishment.
I am a Bishop, well educated in classical literature and theology.
I have never been to the Arctic, or seen a wild polar bear.
But off the top of my head, I can't see why polar bears are white.
So Evolution can't explain it.

Date: 2003-12-02 10:09 am (UTC)The "small-target" idea was from Labor's so-called stategist Bob McMullin. Nice guy, nice politics but when it comes to strategy I think he's a dropkick. You don't try to play "small target" with Beazley. He has big ideas, he has a big heart and basically, well, he's big.
Interestingly when Beazley went on the attack - taking advice from a friend of mine, rather than McMullin - (such as the televised debate) he was at his best.
