Have enjoyed long weekend - opportunity to get caught up on some painting at last. Touched up bald spots on several figures, finished a large snake, an eagle, two pegasi, and Kanaye the Dire Wolverine, who regularly features in
shinyshinyelves.
Some pics of Kanaye in his brand-new allosaurus-hide spiked armour, still with the allosaurus' original patterning, here. The animal is a Reaper Minis bear, which came with its own saddle. Pommel is an ogre skull, taken from Reaper's "Skulls of 8 Races". The armour is my own work, epoxy putty and bits of toothpick. More putty to blend the original base with a 1"x2" rectangular plastic one - I prefer these, since it's easier to see where everything is on the grid.
Mixed feelings about the armour. It's the first time I've tried to do anything more with putty than filling gaps, and it's rather rough-and-ready. One of the reasons I went to some trouble patterning the hide is to distract the viewer from the roughness of the shape (though the primitive, improvised look sort of suits Kanaye, IMHO).
Overall finish is a bit shiny, exaggerated here by the camera flash. Will probably respray with a matt varnish, and add some flocking to the base, once I have a batch of figures ready to flock.
I'm fairly happy with the overall concept, as armour designed to protect a flexible animal - the hanging skirts give reasonable protection to the legs and back, without hindering the movement too much. I wanted more armour on the chest, but couldn't make it work without looking too cumbersome - and if people want to come that close to the sharp end of a ton of angry mustelid, that's their problem. Besides serving as a pommel and a way to show off one of Calair's kills, the skull is big enough and solid enough to give the rider some protection. And should Kiki the weasel want a good view, she can sit in the skull and peek out through the eye sockets.
Side note: One of the reasons I like Reaper is their attention to detail. It's not visible in these photos, but the skulls are so detailed you can actually see the growth plates at the back.
Ah well, off to bed. Actually got stuff done this weekend!
