That time of year again...

Once again, it's time to renew the ANSYS licence, which expires at the end of the week. Although since the licence file is specific to hardware serial numbers, and Simon's just upgraded his PC, it has in fact already stopped working. (ANSYS Inc. have sent us an update file to fix this, which to nobody's great surprise it has not in fact done.) I've been using this software for 5 years now, and in that time I don't think the yearly relicensing has ever occurred without at least a week's outage (the record license outage was nine months. No, really.)
The odd thing about this is that just for a change, the yearly outage has happened at a time when I didn't have any pressing work to do. No imminent deadlines to meet. Indeed, I can probably spend the next week or so going through my code and fixing it, something which I do need to do, so this is actually a reasonably good time for an outage. Now that has never happened before :-)
Update: And after only one false start, the file has been fixed, just as an imminent deadline suddenly popped up out of nowhere. Wonder of wonders!
