Wound up talking to Dr. Seward again at morning tea. While the performance we saw had its flaws, it all ran pretty smoothly - the actors all remembered their lines, the unconvincing rubber bat hurtled towards the audience at the right moment and didn't *quite* fly into the eager hands of the kid sitting in front of us, that sort of thing.
This, apparently, was not the case a couple of nights later, when Jonathan Harker missed his flight back from Melbourne and he had to be replaced by a stand-in reading from a script.
Or on the last day, when LucyWestenraSeward* fractured her arm (not on stage) and had to do the whole play in a sling. I'm guessing this would have made the Sensuous Vampiric Embrace scene a little awkward.
*Seward also mentioned to me that he finds it a little peculiar that this particular version of the story turns him from Lucy's suitor into her father...
