In discrete math in college, they taught us that the number 1 was actually the octopus that touches all octopuses with the property that if they're touching A and also touching B, then A and B are the same thing.

That was near the end of the semester, though, so I don't know where he was going with it. We didn't get to where they'd even define what addition meant.
