Back From Easter Camping Holiday

lederhosenBought new tent, misc other camping gear. Rey got back from work ca. 10 am yesterday, we packed car, and ca. 1 pm set off for campsite at Kanangra National Park.
3 pm, after spending ages in traffic due to traditional Easter road accident up ahead, got to National Parks entry place and paid our parks admission fee. Were told that there should be plenty of space at the campsite.
6 pm, got to campsite with just nicely enough time to set up camp before dark. Discovered campsite was chock-full, mostly with people who'd just driven in without bothering to pay the admission fee*. Threw up our hands, said 'sod this', and drove back. (Other campsites also almost certainly full by that stage, and probably some hours away anyway. More remote sites not really an option with our current car.)
8 pm, we ran out of petrol near Mt. Victoria. Could probably have limped another 500 metres or so, but I wanted to pull over while I still had a choice about it rather than having the engine die halfway up a hill on the wrong side of a blind corner. Ended up calling the local taxi company to get a lift to the nearest petrol station.
8:30 pm, taxi showed.
8:32 pm, arrived at petrol station, about 500 metres past the spot where I'd left the car. Took me about 5 minutes to walk back to the car with a can of petrol. Most of which ended up on my hands, but enough got into the tank to take us on to the station.
Could probably have made it home from there, but were tired and grumpy and roads were busy, so ended up staying in a hotel for the night and driving home this morning.
On bright side, did not have expensive car breakdown, did not contribute to Easter road toll, and did not get nailed to tree. Instead, will be painting stuff and running a D&D game tomorrow. I envision that the party will spend about twelve hours trekking to the adventure location, only to discover that every possible campsite has already been occupied by kobolds. And then Edward's horse will run out of oats.
