Painting stuff, and possible TMI
Aug. 1st, 2004 01:08 pmI finished painting Shelob. This took longer than I'd expected, because as I worked I kept finding areas that hadn't been properly undercoated (I don't have great lighting where I'm working, and the narrow spots where the legs articulate tend to be 'shadowed' by surrounding material). So, lots of touching-up and repainting.
Worked out in the end, though. I went with a fairly muted colour scheme, but it looks quite convincing, and I think I managed to find all her eyes and paint them appropriately. (Ten, in roughly symmetrical locations. I can't remember how many spiders are supposed to have.)
What I haven't done yet is base her; for that, I want to do web effects, which involves getting some clear liquid latex. So I went down to Sax Leather, because it was easier than finding a theatrical supply store (hey, this is Sydney), and because I thought they'd be more likely to have the stuff in small amounts. Fortunately the friendly pervert behind the counter was able to tell me that the formulation sold as an 'adult novelty' isn't suitable for SFX use, because it becomes brittle after a few days, so I'll be getting the craft version after all. That would've been VERY frustrating.
In the 'should have thought of that earlier' files, I realised I could've coated unpainted Shelob in the stuff, then peeled it off to make it look like she'd just shed her skin. I don't think I want to risk the paintjob by doing that now, though.
Other stuff: two small spiders, one beetle (who looks rather good, and took all of about ten minutes' actual painting), and one bat. Who also took very little time, and looks really nice - I went for a fruitbat look, with black-grey skin but reddish fur. Next up, a whole bunch of Drow.
