Oops, and Mysteries of the Deep
Oct. 22nd, 2003 12:33 pm(1) I goofed. One of the questions on my meme entry yesterday has two false answers. You get credit for either of them.
(2) Thanks to Bloopwatch:
In 1997, US Navy sensors designed to detect Soviet submarines repeatedly caught this sound coming from somewhere in the region of 50 S, 100 W. It was loud enough to be detected by sensors 3000 miles apart - while those sensors are very sensitive, this still makes it much louder than any whale ever recorded.
Analysts agree that the sound is "most likely to be biological in origin".
I'm not sure whether to be spooked or awestruck. Both, I guess.
