Interesting interview with Dr. Harlan Ullman here. Although I wasn't a great enthusiast of 'shock and awe', his assessment of the ongoing situation in Iraq strikes me as a shrewd one.

(Couple of goofs in the transcript... I'm fairly sure that "deranger" should be "derringer".)

Muppets Take Mordor

Slow afternoon on IRC with malloc1024 and ambitious_wench. Ended up discussing the idea of 'Lord of the Rings', as the Muppets might tell it. Some highlights:

Kermit as Aragorn. Possibly doubling as Frodo, unless we want to use Robin for that. Fozzie Bear as Sam Gamgee.

Count von Count as Sauron: "Three elven rings! Count them, three! A-ha-ha!"

Sam the Eagle as Gandalf.

Gonzo the Great, as Gollum (especially the torture scene).

Waldorf and Statler as two giant statues, making disparaging remarks as the Fellowship paddles past them.

Saruman and Wormtongue: Dr. Bunsen Honeydew and Beaker. No, think about it, it works!

Tom Bombadil and Goldberry: Dr. Teeth and Janice. (Animal gets to be the Balrog.)

Eomer: Link Hogthrob, riding to the rescue with a horde of biker pigs. Theoden could be played by the Swedish Chef.

Eowyn: Miss Piggy. Watch for the scene where she karate-chops the Witch-King of Angmar and his steed (Big Bird?) before locking Arwen (guest star Liv Tyler) into her dressing room and riding off into the sunset with Aragorn (Kermit).
