A WH40K question

In a universe full of shrapnel, insidious bio-toxins, flame weapons and acid-spitting monstrosities, why is it that the oldest and most experienced Space Marines - some of whom have survived literally centuries of battle - are the ones most prone to going into battle without their helmets?

This is totally supported by the WH40K ethos, which says: Be huge, brutal, and know no fear and VICTORY IS THINE.
