Well, crap.

I'd volunteered to run a game for this year's Necronomicon over the Easter long weekend, but hadn't heard back from con organisers about it. Just found out why:

Due to circumstances beyond our control, Necronomicon will not be happening this Easter 2007 weekend. The venue, Newtown High School of Performing Arts, has just changed its mind on hiring the venue to us - after doing so regularly for over 15 years. A change of administration and a change of mind that is not helpful to us. When we learnt of this earlier this week, we spent days trying to find a similar venue in the inner west on short notice.

I don't know NHSPA's reasons and I'd prefer to hear both sides of things before passing judgement, but one would hope they had an EXCEPTIONALLY good reason for pulling the plug on a major event on just three weeks' notice.

There are possible issues looming for one of the cons over here too, with poor communication between parties at the venue, and changing contract details at the last moment. Cleaning is now not included in the going rate, which incidentally stays the same; and from the rates asked they'd have to be cleaning the entire premises with a toothbrush and licking the bins clean. Hmph.

Apparently, although the gig has been at the same venue for 18 years, the school had a change of Principal and he is the one who has decided to cancel things.

I'm about to write a letter to the Minister to complain.

One hopes that the con organizers hadn't left it that late to confirm their booking of the venue.

My understanding is that it was confirmed back in January, although I still haven't heard the school's side of things. (I understand they have a new principal this year, and that's where the decision came from, but I don't know any details.)
