Longer holiday post
This one was
reynardo's idea... about six months ago, she decided to put her bonus towards going to the US to surprise
jazzmasterson and
harliquinn for their wedding. We conspired with
mdsteele47 and various others along the route, which we managed to stretch as far as Maine to Baltimore and DC thanks to generous folk who offered large amounts of driving along the way. Apologies to those who we missed; we were trying to keep this as secret as possible, so we only told a few people in advance. As usual, time and money didn't allow us to do half what we'd have liked.
So, on the evening of Friday 16th, Rey and I flew out of Sydney. Ten hours to Hawaii, where we did customs & immigration and waited around a couple of hours before flying five more hours to LA, where it was still Friday evening. A couple of hours more at LAX (where we unanimously decided that the five-second rule does not apply) and then a red-eye to Cleveland & thence to New Hampshire. By the time
panacea1, Moxie and
notasquirrel picked us up, we'd been travelling for about 30 hours and were very glad to get outside an airport.
Several days in Maine seeing the sights and replacing Tim Tams with maple products and Moxie. We stopped by the Black Frog and were greatly amused by their menu; the food was good too. We did some letterboxing and visited Moxie Falls, and didn't quite die from sugar after eating a maple whoopie pie each. Moxie's brother showed us video of 'busting' (destroying old electronics etc) and I de-jet-lagged.
Then we picked up our rental car and drove down to Massachusetts with the squirrels, who stayed with us for an evening at the AWF's place before heading back to Maine. We offloaded more Tim Tams, acquired more maple products, and tookincriminatingstriking photos of Buzzy.
They were feeling mischievous and took us to the Outback Steakhouse, which was an... interesting... experience. Unfortunately, nobody ordered 'Aussie fries', so I never did get to find out what those are. Rey ordered a rare steak, and we were a little disturbed when the waitress came back to tell us that they were "out of rare". The bit that amused me most was the giant stuffed kiwi bird at the entrance, seeing as how the kiwi is to Australia what the maple leaf is to the USA :-)
verrat, who is growing into a gorgeous young lady, celebrated her 18th. We made "you must come to Australia" noises at her. Introduced Scott and Jan to 'A Very Scary Solstice'; unfortunately we didn't get to play it at
verrat, but I suspect the household will be getting their own copy soon for the Stereo Room of Doom.
Hit the gaming shops and found a Reaper dragon going ridiculously cheap. Made up for this by buying plenty of other stuff as well, including Super Munchkin and a couple of D&D books. (One of them has rules for taking a lemming as a familiar, which may come in handy if Neil goes ahead with his plan to put a level in sorcerer.)
After that, we drove on to Connecticut. We were staying in the same guest house as JazznAmber, so we did a certain amount of skulking to avoid bumping into them, checked in, and then drove to the pre-wedding bonfire party. Met lots of cool people from LJ (hi there!) and hid ourselves in
harliquinn's mother's walk-in closet, where
harliquinn and then
jazzmasterson were ever-so-subtly encouraged to discover us a little while later. Lots of amazed looks and happy squeeeing and hugs ensued :-) Then out to the bonfire, where we made new friends (though not as many as
notasquirrel, who is travelling with us).
Next up, the wedding!

So, if there is a sudden squirrel revolt in Eastern Connecticut, we know who to blame?
