Dreamwidth question

I understand importing an LJ to DW is fairly painless, in general.

How well does it cope with filtered posts (i.e. other than general friends-locked)? "Magically figures out which DW accounts equate to which LJ accounts and translates filters accordingly" would be lovely but seems unlikely; "keeps filter settings but requires you to re-define membership for each filter" would be OK; "sets filtered posts to general access", not so much.

I gather that there is a general trend to decamp?

I've just had a look at my journals over there. I didn't check every single filtered post, but I had a look at a few. As far as I can tell, importing a journal with filtered posts:

- Creates DW custom filter groups matching your LJ filters.
- Populates the filter groups with the OpenID names of the people who are in the group on LJ.
- Does not add any DW usernames to the filter groups.
- Keeps filtered posts marked as filtered to the appropriate group.

I'm actually curious about crossposting.

If you crosspost a filter locked post on DW, what does it do on LJ?

I'm considering my options. I registered a DW account way back, but I haven't been using it yet.

Ah, nifty. I am an ignoramus where OpenID is concerned - does that mean that somebody who's logged in on LJ and in the appropriate filter could automatically read filtered posts on DW, or do they have to do a second login to see them?

Also, unrelated - have you seen Tropic Thunder? There is an easter egg in it for you.

It's posted to LJ with the same security level.

I have a "fandom" filter on DW, and a "fandom" filter on LJ. If I post a "fandom"-locked entry on DW, it's also posted to LJ under the same filter.

So if Bob is on my "fandom" filter on LJ, but he doesn't have a DW, he'll see my "fandom"-filtered posts on LJ.

As I understand it, you have to 'log in' to Dreamwidth with your OpenID while you're already logged into Livejournal. Dreamwidth then asks Livejournal to validate your identity, and Livejournal asks you if that's okay. After that, you're logged into Dreamwidth as, e.g. lederhosen.livejournal.com, and you'll be able to see any posts that have lederhosen.livejournal.com on the filter.

You can then leave comments on DW with the Livejournal OpenID, and you can set up your OpenID on DW to have comment notifications emailed to you. (See FAQ.) And you have control over any comments you've left on LJs that have been imported, because they're associated with your livejournal OpenID. E.g. lederhosen.livejournal.com has left 1,248 on DW.

ETA: One of the things DW are planning to implement in the future is the ability to link your OpenIDs with your DW username, so that all the important comments will them be ascribed to your DW username, not the OpenIDs.

Also, unrelated - have you seen Tropic Thunder?

I haven't, but I'm sure you won't be surprised to know that I already knew Lance shows up in it. :-)

Yep, the filtering works beautifully, if you set up your permissions groups the same. And if you kick it off with an LJ import, it brings your groups across anyway. No more complicated than that.

I guessed as much :-) I wouldn't watch it just for his cameo, but I enjoyed it very much quite aside from that.
