Kitten!

Expensive cat toy!

While I'm here: forgot to mention where Rey and I went last Friday night (or was it Thursday?) We went out to a theme bar, the theme being 'bloody cold'. The furniture, decor, and glasses are all made of ice. It was a bit pricey ($30 gets you half an hour's entry and one drink, $40 if you want a second) but as the review says, "It's unfair to compare Minus 5 with other bars that aren't made entirely of ice".

Oh, and a quote I liked:

"Readers should certainly be warned that many of the details out of which this book's narrative has been constructed are ambiguous and ferociously disputed - and that the sudden appearance of a number in the text, hovering like a fly over a midden, generally indicates that qualification is being offered in an endnote." - Tom Holland, Persian Fire: The First World Empire and the Battle for the West.

Wow, I have to say that the article is definitely Australocentric though. I suppose Australians' blood isn't quite thick enough to handle it, but here in the Northeast USA, in the heart of January and February, -5°C is almost warm! I believe it was two or three straight weeks in winter of 2003, we didn't get above that temperature. At all. Day or night.

I love the article — limit exposure to 30 minutes. Ha! Our road crews and construction workers that work eight hour shifts at those temperatures laugh at this weakling of an article author. The coldest I've ever been in is -35°C, and that's the point at which you might want to think about getting yourself inside as quickly as you can. (I was outside for less than 60 seconds before realizing that it was damn frickin' cold and it wasn't fun to be at such a low temperature anymore.)

Glad you had a good time, and despite the article it seems like a very cool place regardless. :-)

Kitty!

The Universal Cat Toy (tm), however, is less expensive. I have yet to understand why, but buy a conductor's baton and wave it for a cat. I guarantee it's a hit. It has yet to fail in the experiments I have conducted, across kitty temperments and age. Even [livejournal.com profile] rockingrobin's Kitty of Significantly Advanced Age paid attention to it when we tested it out a couple years back.

They imported the ice from Canada?!

How odd.

Anyway, I'm still holding out for a night or few in the appropriate incarnation of the Ice Hotel (http://www.icehotel.com/Winter/)...
