After a month or two of chasing it up, I finally get the data I need to plug into my lens modelling routines. So, bright-eyed and hopeful, I connect to the remote machine on which I do my work.
Nothing. Telnet, nothing. Telnet from a different machine... connection refused.
Eventually I discover that because the machine has been hacked, they've upgraded security. Instead of telnet, ftp, and most importantly XWin, which I've been using up till now, I have to use ssh (which I have), SCP (which I don't, but can get) and a newer and buggy version of XWin which I don't have and which UNSW does not have a licence for.
I appreciate that they needed to upgrade security, but they could have bloody well TOLD me at some time in the last six weeks, which is apparently how long it is since they decided to do this, which would have given me plenty of time to set up for it while waiting for data. For some reason my Evil Former Co-Supervisor (who set up the upgrades) is quite capable of mass-mailing every postgrad student in the department any time he wants support for the serials he wants in the library, but not when it involves computer access.
*sigh*
Bugger this. I'm going to install ANSYS on my work PC here. It may run slower, but at least I won't get screwed around like this every time it looks like I'm on the verge of getting some work done.
